Over 500 workers belonging to Left parties, BJP and various trade unions were arrested here on Thursday for staging road blockades at different places as part of the nation-wide agitation against diesel price hike, FDI in multi-brand retail and restriction on subsidised LPG cylinders. The bandh, though affected normal life in the Union territory, passed off peacefully with no reports of any untoward incident.
Educational institutions, retail shops and markets remained closed while commercial hubs like Nehru Street, Anna Salai, Mahatma Gandhi Street and Mission Street wore a deserted look.
The Chamber de Commerce also extended their support to the bandh. Hotels, wine shops and petrol pumps inside the town limits were also shut.
State-owned buses were operational, though not many people chose to travel by public transport, while private buses stayed off the roads.
As a result, employees of government offices had a tough time reaching their destinations. Security arrangements were also tight as policemen were posted at all key junctions and patrol vans kept a watch for trouble makers.
