Bangalore: Asia's Information Technology (IT) capital Bangalore is the worst place for the elderly people. According to a survey conducted by an NGO 'Help Age' India, the highest number of atrocities are committed against the aged people in Bangalore. Sadly, most of the perpetrators are sons and daughters-in-law.

The 'Help Age' India survey of the elderly people was conducted in 6 metro cities (Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad) and 6 Tier I cities across India. It has interviewed 1,200 elderly people.

In Bangalore, 75 per cent respondents answered that they were being subjected to cruelty by their own sons and daughters-in-law. In national capital Delhi, just 22 per cent answered that they are subjected to cruelty by their own family members.

Among Tier II cities, in Nagpur 85 per cent elderly people answered that their children are taking care of them. In Kanpur, it is just 13 per cent.

Survey findings show that 59 per cent sons and 61 per cent daughters in law are ill treating the elderly men and women in their family. Among them 41 per cent of the elderly people face abusive language, 33 per cent are not respected and 29 per cent neglected.

More than 41 per cent elderly people don't make it public fearing negative publicity for their families. More than 64 per cent elderly people are aware of dedicated helplines for the elderly people in trouble. But a mere 12 per cent take its help. Rest of the elderly people share their plight with relatives, daughters and friends.

Bangalore City Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar has expressed shock over the findings of the survey. He has requested the elderly people in distress to contact the police for any help. He has also decided to open helplines for the elderly people in all 5 police sub-division in Bangalore.
