CHENNAI: It was a ploy that finally took a heavy toll on him. A 23-year-old bank employee, who pretended to be a sub-inspector to evade toll charges, ended behind bars after the real cops called his bluff on ECR on Saturday.Around midnight, MBA graduate G Soundarapandian of Sairam Nagar in Medavakkam, was returning with his friends after watching a film at an open air theatre on ECR. At Akkarai, Soundarapandian, A service adviser in a cooperative bank at Keezhkattalai, stopped a Tata Sumo and told driver Devaraj that he was an SI, a police officer told Express. He got into the vehicle with his friends and asked the driver to drop them at a multiplex in Kanathur. As the vehicle reached the toll plaza at Uthandi, the staff demanded the toll. “Soundarapandian claimed that he was an SI and refused to pay,” the officer said. As an argument ensued, toll plaza supervisor Vennin Arul Anand demanded to see the youth’s identity card. The ‘SI’ refused to comply and created a ruckus, leading to a traffic buildup at the toll centre. It was left to DCP (Adyar) K A Senthilvelan, who was on patrol duty, to finally call his bluff, when he arrived there and questioned Soundarapandian. On the basis of a complaint filed by toll plaze supervisor, the youth, who was found to have had too many drinks, was booked under sections 294(B), 417 and 506(1) of IPC and arrested. He was produced before court which remanded him in judicial custody. He was lodged at the central jail in Puzhal.Rowdy hacked to deathA rowdy was hacked to death by an armed gang at K K Nagar on Saturday.K Murali (27) of Naiydhal Street, hailed from a well-to-do family. On Saturday, he was nearing a TASMAC shop on PT Rajan Salai, when a gang emerging from an autorickshaw  hailed him. As he approached them, they took out knives and hacked him. As a bleeding Murali fell down, the assailants fled. He  later succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
