Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday asked the officials of departments concerned to be ready for floods during the monsoon. He reviewed arrangements, made by different departments, to tackle any situation arising out of floods in the coming days. He asked officials to make provision for adequate drinking water and stock food materials to be used during floods, if any. If there is crop damage due to floods, alternative arrangements should be in place to deal with the situation, he said. Official sources said Water Resources Department has already deployed watch and ward personnel to guard vulnerable spots on river embankments. Adequate stock of bamboos and sand bags has also been made.
The Rural Development Department has completed maintenance work of tube-wells in flood-prone areas. The Chief Minister was informed that adequate quantity of medicines has been stocked and medical teams have been kept ready for any eventuality. Besides, food materials have also been stored for three months in vulnerable areas. So far, 527 country boats are available. The district collectors have been asked to keep them ready. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Surjya Narayan Patro, Chief Secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik and Development Commissioner RN Senapati attended the meeting.
KHARIF REVIEW: The Chief Minister also reviewed the steps taken for kharif crop at a separate meeting. Out of the target fixed to take up paddy cultivation in 31 lakh hectares, farming has already been done on 28 lakh hectares. Besides, 4.36 lakh quintal seeds have been sold to the seed centres all over the State.
