Bengaluru Breaks Heat Records, Witnesses Driest April In 41 Years

The continuous change in Bengaluru’s weather is a clear indication that climate change is hitting the city hard. For the first time in the last 41 years, the city known for its charming climate is facing an unusually hot summer with heat wave prediction from May 1-4. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru has not recorded any rainfall in the month of April, marking the first such instance since 1983.

Facing its driest April in the last four decades, Bengaluru recorded 0 mm of rainfall during the month. Experts are worried over the change in weather conditions as this phenomenon was observed in 1983 and since then Bengaluru residents have been witnessing rainfall in April every year.

“This is the first time since 1983 that April has passed without rain in Bengaluru,” A Prasad, a senior scientist at the IMD Bengaluru observatory, was quoted as saying by Moneycontrol.

The city last recorded rainfall of around 106.6 mm in November 2023 and since then no notable rainfall has been recorded causing rise in the temperature. With the mercury touching 38.5 degrees Celsius, Bengaluru witnessed the second-hottest day in at least 50 years. The hottest day was recorded in April 2016 at 39.2 degrees Celsius.

An update from Namma Karnataka weather on X shared data regarding the rising temperature in the city stating Bengaluru is back in the 38-degree Celsius range after decades.

5th Highest April Temperature: Its a tie at 38.0 Degrees Celsius between April 27, 2024 and April 23, 2016

Notably, the last four days of 2024 April in Bengaluru recorded: 38.0 C, 38.5 C, 37.8 C and 38.2 C.

Bengaluru Likely to Witness Heat in May

Bengaluru residents are unlikely to receive any relief from the ongoing heatwave-like conditions. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, no significant change will be witnessed in the early days of the month. The maximum and minimum temperatures in the city are likely to remain to be around 38 degrees Celsius.

The city is likely to witness heatwave from May 1 to May 4.
