KOCHI: Those who think that they can evade the police after violating traffic signals, beware! For, there are camera eyes installed at traffic signals to watch you round-the-clock. To keep a tab on every single thing happening on the road, the city police have decided to install 32 additional high definition cameras at different parts of the city. “We had installed 35 cameras in the first phase. In the second phase, 32 more cameras will be installed. They are very powerful and can be used even during rainy seasons. They can zoom and give a glimpse of the rider and the vehicle number even half a km away. The cameras can watch vehicles moving in any direction with ease as it can be rotated by the operators in the control room. What is caught in the camera will be passed on to the control room mobile unit and the officials can book the drivers easily,” a top police official said.He added that the officials can send a notice to the vehicle registration address and charge case after showing them the video clips of the offence. Currently, the poles for placing the camera have been erected. “The cabling works are going on and the poles have been fixed. The work will be completed within a month. With this, almost all parts of the city can be monitored from the control room. The first phase had covered core areas like MG Road and Banarjee Road. The second phase will cover traffic on the Edappally to Vytilla stretch,” Control Room Assistant Commissioner K S Vijayappan said.According to him, surveillance cameras have become very effective method to catch traffic offenders. “On an average, more than 200 offenders are booked using surveillance cameras each month. The surveillance camera can monitor to ensure the proper traffic in the area,” the police official said.
