Bilaspur sterilisation deaths: Raids being conducted by government in all medical shops in Chhattisgarh
Collectors are to inspect all the private hospitals in the districts and see that the banned drugs are not still in use.

Bilaspur: Raids were conducted on Friday by health department officials in all the medical shops in Chhattisgarh. The raid took place in Raigarh, Dhamtari, Korba, Janjgir-Champa, Sukma and other districts. Reportedly, collectors are to inspect all the private hospitals in the districts and see that the banned drugs are not still in use.

Chhattisgarh government has banned the drugs manufactured by Messrs Mahavar Pharma Private Limited with immediate effect. Allegedly, many patients fell ill after consuming the drugs manufactured by the company in Bilaspur.

Prior to this the Chhattisgarh Police had arrested surgeon Dr RK Gupta who had conducted the failed sterilisation surgeries which claimed the lives of 14 women and left over 50 hospitalised. Dr Gupta was the first person to be arrested in the Bilaspur tragedy case.

The state police is on the lookout for other doctors and assistants who helped him during the surgeries. The arrest comes after the National Human Rights Commission issued notices to the Chhattisgarh government on Wednesday, seeking a response within two weeks.

The Chhattisgarh Food and Drug Control department has banned the sale of 6 drugs which were used in the botched-up sterilisation camp in Bilaspur. Samples of the drugs and injections used in the surgery have been sent to the Central Drugs Laboratory in Kolkata.

Shockingly enough, Bilaspur has been privy to another similar case where four out of 28 women who underwent a sterilisation surgery at another government run camp were also hospitalised on Wednesday. The state government has blamed the doctors for medical negligence.
