THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The eightieth birthday celebrations of leading theatre personality P K Venukuttan Nair will be held at Hassan Marakkar Hall here on Thursday. The event being organised by his friends and colleagues will be an act of devotion to the drama maestro.Born in a family of theatre artistes, Venukuttan Nair had a liking for acting and production of drama from childhood days. His debut in the world of drama began at the age of 14 when he assisted in organising ‘Dramatic Bureau,’ a platform meant for the child artistes. At the age of 17, he acted in Pulimana Parameswaran Pillai’s ‘Samathwa Vadi’, receiving applause from drama critics and masters. Venukuttan Nair came to the limelight through various clubs including Sankha Sakthi, Sankha Chethana, Vadakara Varada and Thrissur Yamuna. The initiative of Venukuttan Nair to start a new troupe ‘Karthyayani Theatres ‘ was a rebellious move in the Malayalam drama arena. It was meant to dissolve the boundaries between professional and amateur theatres.His most discussed act was his foray into the Greek epics. 'Antigone and ‘Elektra,’ whose dramatic versions won him critical acclaim. He was member of the Kerala University Senate, Board of Studies of Calicut University and Kendra Sangeetha Nataka Academy. He had also served as vice- chairman, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy. He had also won the best director award in the Kerala professional drama competition four times.
