Bihar BJP on Friday strongly criticised the UPA government for failing to introduce legislation during the session of Parliament for establishment of a central university at Motihari and alleged that this was due to "lackadaisical" approach of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
"What to name the proposed central university at Motihari after Mahatma Gandhi? The UPA government did not even introduce the legislation for it in the current session thus delaying establishment of the university by one year," former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi told reporters outside Legislative Assembly.
"The Manmohan Singh government got the legislation approved from Parliament for opening Indira Gandhi national women university in Sonia Gandhi constituency Rae Bareilly and another one, an engineering university in Shibpur in West Bengal. But, it did not deemed it necessary to bring a legislation for Motihari Central University," he said.
The senior BJP leader blamed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for failing to create any "pressure" on the Centre for it.
"Nitish Kumar who is running his minority government with the help of Congress in Bihar failed to create any pressure on the Centre for Motihari University," Sushil Modi alleged.
He said after long struggle, the Centre had agreed to set up two central universities at Motihari along with one at Gaya.
A large number of students who were waiting to study in the Motihari university have been left dejected, he said, adding, now only the next government could take up the legislation for the university, he added.
