BJP welcomes verdict on BMW expose case
Congress said the incident shows the need to evaluate professional ethics.

New Delhi: While the BJP welcomed the Delhi High Court verdict pronounced on Thursday against senior advocates RK Anand and IU Khan for obstructing justice in the BMW expose case, the Congress party said the incident shows that there is a need to evaluate professional ethics.

A division bench of the high court headed by Justices Manmohan Sarin and Madan B Lokur debarred Anand and Khan from appearing in court for four months, stripped them of senior advocate status and slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 on them.

The court found them guilty of obstructing justice in the BMW hit-and-run case as they had tried to influence a witness.

The two were caught in a sting operation conducted by a news channel.

“This is a vindication of the law of the nation. Anyone, even if he is an eminent lawyer, should not fiddle with the law. Today the majesty of the law has been upheld,” BJP spokesperson and lawyer Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters.

He said the case should be treated as an “unfortunate aberration” as there are many lawyers who are doing good work.

“I condemn R K Anand’s action. This is not the way senior lawyers and MPs should behave. It is for the Congress party to explain,” Prasad said.

RK Anand is a former MP from the Congress party. The Congress was more guarded in its reaction. “It is an unfortunate incident leading to this kind of verdict. There is a need to evaluate ethics, particularly professional ethics,” head of Congress media cell Veerappa Moily said.

“At the Administrative Reforms Commission, we are coming out with a report which will deal with professional ethics,” he said.

“I think this is a matter which will now have to be taken into serious consideration by institutions like the Bar Council and standards will have to be laid down,” Moily added.
