CHENNAI: When dance meets murder, there are few reference points to consider in the musical film genre. Inspired by Lorca’s transcendental work, Carlos Saura, directed Bodas de Sangre in 1981 as part of his dance trilogy, 'Blood Wedding' will certainly be a first-of-its-kind for Chennai theatre enthusiasts. Director V Balakrishnan of Theatre Nisha explains, “The play is set in rural Spain, in an agrarian society where land was often compared to women.” A peek at their rehearsals and it is evident that the story revolves around wedding plans for the young son of a perhaps overly protective mother. This is understandable, taking into account the aforementioned deaths of her husband and eldest son, in the past. However, a previous affair proves a rather unforgiving distraction for the bride-to-be and unable to restrain their passions, the characters are ruined by their lust for blood. “The only character that has a name in the play is Leonardo,” reveals Balakrishnan and “he is not the groom.” With much of the play dominated by latin styles of dance such as flamenco, pasodoble, tango and merengue — sensuality will be a given with this production. On a lighter note, the director offers,“For Chennai, this is very close to the Paruthiveeran kind of concept, where honour killings between feuding families are a part of the norm.” (Blood Wedding will be staged at Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium, Mylapore on Sep 15 and 16 at 7.30pm)
