CHENNAI: From the roaring cheers and the escalating claps, anyone stepping into the hall, could be hoping to get some cricketing action on screen, Mind you, this is no IPL. Welcome to the Ophthalmic Premier League (OPL) at the Le Meridian on Sunday which was inspired and fashioned on the lines of the IPL. They had four teams presenting challenging cases through videos with Umpire, match Referee and Third Umpires judging the presentation.‘Ahmedabad Acrylics’, captained by Dr Keiki Mehta, walked through the audience towards the dias amid much fanfare, complete with drums beating and trumpet blowing, with only the cheer girls missing, setting the tone for the event. The other teams were ‘Mumbai Multifocals’ captained by Dr TP Lahane, ‘Delhi Divide and Conquer’ captained by Dr Mahipal Sachdev and finally the ‘Chennai Capsules’ led by Dr Mohan Rajan.Each team had four members who presented challenging and at times nightmarish case videos and their management. Each member was given four minutes for the presentation. The presentation was well spiced with humor and many funny jabs by the surgeons at each other.At the end, Ahmedabad Acrylics won the trophy. Match Referee Dr Roger Steinert, who is HOD of Ophthalmology, University of California and Head of Programme — Chair of American Society of Cataract and Refractive surgery said, “All the teams displayed great spirit and presented some insightful clinical cases. But finally the trophy went to the Ahmedabad Acrylics because they had good combination of fun and great clinical cases.”Attended by over 1200 Ophthalmologists from across the globe, this two day conference is for the benefit of Cataract and Refractive surgery specialists and aspiring ophthalmologists to keep up to date on the latest techniques and technology in intraocular implants and refractive surgery that are constantly evolving.
