In a heart-wrenching incident from Siddhpur Kaithauli village in Budaun district, Uttar Pradesh, a bride’s joyous anticipation turned into a night of despair as her groom failed to arrive with the ‘baraat’, allegedly due to a last-minute demand for additional dowry. The events unfolded on Tuesday, July 9, when the bride, eagerly awaiting the groom’s arrival, found herself exhausted and eventually asleep after hours of anticipation. Despite preparations being in place and guests gathering, the wedding procession from Rajthal, scheduled to arrive that day, never showed up.
Dhanpal, the bride’s father, recounted how the evening turned into a vigil that stretched past midnight, with no sign of the groom or his entourage. Attempts were made to send a horse-drawn carriage and band to fetch the bride, but the groom himself failed to accompany the procession. Faced with a distraught family and disappointed guests, Dhanpal sought help from the authorities, alerting the police via emergency services. By morning, realising the groom’s absence wasn’t just a delay, but a deliberate decision, the bride and her father made their way to Bisauli police station to file a formal complaint, demanding justice for what they described as an extortion attempt.
According to Dhanpal, the groom’s family had initially agreed to a wedding without additional demands, but on the day of the event, insisted on an extra Rs 4 lakh beyond the agreed upon Rs 8 lakh. When Dhanpal expressed his inability to meet this demand, the groom’s party failed to uphold their commitment, leaving the bride and her family devastated.
This incident has sparked outrage in the community and raised questions about dowry-related practices despite legal prohibitions. Authorities are investigating the matter, and the bride’s family is determined to seek justice for what they perceive as a betrayal of trust and a breach of solemn promise.
