New Delhi: At least 10 people have been killed and over 30 are feared trapped after a building collapsed in the Borivalli suburb of Mumbai on Wednesday evening.
A portion of the building - called Laxmi Chhaya and located at the Babhai Naka - houses 12 families and commercial establishments on the ground floor.
Shopkeepers and customers are among those feared trapped in the rubbles.
According to eyewitness, the top four floors of the building have completely caved in.
Several fire engines have been rushed to the spot and rescue operations are on.
Fire brigade officials say five men, two women and a child have been pulled out of the debris and taken to the nearby Bhagwati Hospital.
At least 12 fire engines and paramedic personnel have been rushed to the spot.
Borivalli is one of the most densely-packed suburbs of Mumbai and has high-rise buildings standing cheek by jowl.
Sources tell CNN-IBN that unlike other building collapses – that have become commonplace in Mumbai – this incident did not occure because the building was old or dilapidated.
They say it was an "architectural fault" that led to Laxmi Chhaya imploding and then collapsing.
