CHENNAI: Burglars decamped with 55 sovereigns of gold from a pawn shop at Guindy on Saturday night. Sampath Karnavat (55) runs a pawn-cum-jewellery shop on New Street in Mosque Colony, Maduvankarai, Investigating Officer S Jayakrishnan told Express. The shop was on the ground floor, while Karnavat lived with his family on the first floor of the independent house. On Saturday night, he locked the shop and retired for the night. On opening the shutters on Sunday morning, he found that burglars had removed the glass slabs in the bathroom window and entered the shop from inside. One of the shelves had been broke open and around 55 sovereigns of gold ornaments stolen. However, about 2.5 kg of gold and 40 sovereigns of gold jewellery in two lockers remained intact. Karnavat lodged a complaint with the Guindy police. The SI said that since entry had been made through the bathroom window, the hand of juvenile offenders was suspected in the burglary.
