“The world is controlled by a handful of capitalists. Whatever ideology a person follows, one should not support the form of capitalism prevailing in the country; the form that is not even found in Western countries,” writer and activist Arundhati Roy said here on Sunday. Roy was in the city for the release of the Telugu version of her book, “Capitalism- A Ghost Story”.
After the book release, former director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) PM Bhargave cited various examples of capitalist domination in present day society.
“We have completely submitted ourselves to the American capitalists. Nuclear deal was a sell out, Indo-US Agricultural Knowledge Initiative etc. did not tell us what we should do about our society,” he said. Speaking about the book, he said, “Capitalism itself has cobwebs around it that no one can see through. What Arundathi’s book has done is remove these cobwebs,” he added.
According to Roy, capitalists would buy everything and make profits out of it and that foundations, sponsored by corporations, are colonising the world yet again.
“The unique identity (UID) and digitisation of land records by the government was all about converting a huge section of population illegible to digital age. Digitisation of commons and legitimisation of poor,” she said. She also took a dig at Team Anna including Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal saying all of them and their anti-corruption movements were funded by the capitalist foundations which aimed at controlling the world legally.
“We are made stuck-up, judgemental, overly-critical, incapable of working with each other, and incapable of really thinking how to break this caste system, which is perfectly positioned for the capitalists to rule,” the author said. Roy has also won the Man Booker Prize for fiction.
Human rights activist Prof G Haragopal introduced the book in Telugu, titled “Pettubadidaari Vidhanam Oka Pretatma Katha”. This was the second book released by Malupu books, which had translated her book, “Broken Republic”, last year.
