Cauvery row is national issue: PM
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressing the Cauvery river water dispute, said it should be viewed as a national issue.

New Delhi: The inter-state conflict over sharing Cauvery river water loomed large on the World Water Day as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed it as an issue that holds “national importance”.

Singh said that the issue of sharing of river water should be viewed as a national issue."We cannot allow human societies to descend into chaos due to conflict on utilisation of water resources be it within nations or between nations. We must view the issue of sharing of water as a national issue," he said at the inauguration function of the 'World Water Day' in the capital.

Following protests from all corners regarding the Cauvery issue, Singh on Tuesday had said he would discuss it with Water Resources Minister Saiduffin Soz.

Meanwhile, the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka do not seem to be agreeing on what they spoke to each other on the issue.

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy had said he would talk to Tamil Nadu CM Karunanidhi on the water-sharing dispute after the state unhappy with the Tribunal's award decided to go to the Supreme Court.

Tamil Nadu's focus now is to ensure the immediate implementation of the Tribunal's final award, while Karnataka Kumaraswamy wants to leave no stone unturned.
