New Delhi: The Supreme Court has upheld the Central government's decision to conduct a caste based census. The court on Friday said that that it is an exercise essential to frame government policy.
The Court has upheld Centre's appeal against Madras High Court's ruling in 2010. "Conducting census is a policy decision and upholds Central government's rights to conduct in whatever manner they want," the court said.
The Central government in August 2010 cleared caste-based census. The decision to carry out caste-based census was taken by a Group of Ministers(GoM).
Census in India is conducted by an Act of Parliament and the data collected forms the basis for the formulation of various welfare schemes. It is also the benchmark for deciding the quantum of reservations for various backward communities.
