CHENNAI: The 15-member committee of experts set up by the Centre to allay fears of the protestors against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant had its first meeting here on Saturday. The day-long meeting, attended by the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Dr Srikumar Banerjee and CMD of Nuclear Power Corporation of India S K Jain, deliberated on the contentions raised by the protestors and the means and ways to allay their fears, a member of the expert committee told Express. The media was not invited to the closed-door meeting that began at 10.30 am at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Taramani. While the expert committee was yet to receive an official brief from the Centre, the consultations for the day centred largely on a set of 14 questions that were posed to the authorities, raising concerns over the safety aspects of the plant.“We will try to represent the entire perspective the way it is to be represented,” the committee member said. “Our job will be to allay the fears of the people and we will do it in a proper manner,” the member added. When asked about how the expert committee would go about its mission, the member said the modalities would be worked out after a few more consultations. The brief for the committee was also under preparation and is likely to be ready in a week’s time.“Facts cannot change, they are real and true. They should be represented and done in the proper way,” the member said, adding that by and large, the focus of the team would be on safety measures adopted at the plant site and to derive lessons from past nuclear accidents so that such mishaps are averted.
