Chandana comes to the city

What’s left of the customer base of one of Chennai’s oldest shopping malls – Spencer Plaza – received a red carpet welcome on the first floor of the complex on Monday. Chandana Bro’s, a showroom for textiles and jewellery, opened its first outlet here in the city. The 60th Chandana showroom in the country, the store was inaugurated by K Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu.

As sales began bright and early right on day one, Rama Rao, one of the directors of the CMRGroup, said the growing Telugu population in Chennai is what drew them to open up an outlet here.

“I’m sure we can pull over 15 per cent of Chennai’s Telugu population to shop here at Chandana,” he said. Promising to open a second Chandana outlet at either T Nagar or another suitably busy area in the city within the next year, Rao explained that despite having the option of choosing to set shop at one of the newer malls, the Group deliberately chose Spencers. “We are working closely with the management and maintenance staff of the complex. We are insisting that a standard of hygiene is maintained and also that the problems pertaining to air conditioning are solved,” he said, hoping that the opening of Chandana might provide Spencers with a new lease of life.

The specialty of the store, Rao said, was the five per cent wastage in machine-cut jewellery. “Since we have our in-house manufacturing facilities in Andhra Pradesh, we are able to sell our products this way,” he said.

Chandana also has in stock a range of pattu saris, including parampara, samudrika and Banaras. “The saris are weaved by master weavers from different parts of Andhra,” Rao informed us.

To explain Chandana in a nutshell, Rao said, “We are the perfect combination of tradition and contemporary designs.”
