COIMBATORE: Police officials in Thrissur, Kerala, have unwittingly ended up disputing their State Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s claim on Sunday last, that no attack had taken place  against Tamils in his State.Thrissur police have registered a FIR acknowledging that a tourist bus from Tamil Nadu was stoned on December 17, a day before Chandy made his claim. In a letter addressed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on December 18, Chandy had claimed that Kerala had taken every possible step to ensure that “no person from Tamil Nadu is attacked”. He alleged that there was a widespread misinformation campaign on attacks on Tamils.“This is the season of Sabarimala pilgrimage. Large number of Ayyappa devotees from Tamil Nadu have been visiting Sabarimala and there have been no untoward instances. On the other hand, pilgrims are happy about the conduct of our people and the police who have been extending all possible help,” he claimed further. He urged Jayalalithaa to protect Keralites in Tamil Nadu as “there are highly disturbing news about several instances of attacks on Keralites”.On Tuesday, however, Chandy’s claims stood disputed by the Kerala police. In a fax sent to the Coimbatore City Police, the Thrissur District Police Chief Vijayan said: “Certain isolated instances of attack on Tamil Nadu registered vehicles were reported at Manapadi in Peramanan police limits on December 17. A case was registered and eight culprits were arrested in this regard.” The Peramangalam police station in Thrissur city has registered a case under IPC 153(a) (Crime no. 1243/2011).Vijayan had also assured the Coimbatore police that the Kerala police would take precautionary measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future.
