A staunch advocate of transparency in governance, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy lamented about his stance in the backdrop of controversies over upcoming Emerging Kerala meet.
“Too much transparency is problematic,” Chandy said, while addressing a programme organised by Department of Environment and Climate Change here on Thursday. “In order to bring transparency, I had installed webcam in my office. Similarly, all projects for the ‘Emerging Kerala’ meet were uploaded on the website. I wanted people to know everything. But now reports go as if the government had approved the projects. I think, too much openness will create problems,’’ he said.
The CM also took a dig at the Green Brigade MLAs who had taken a stand opposing several controversial projects of Emerging Kerala. He was referring to the low participation of people’s representatives in the consultation workshop for State Action Plan on Climate Change.
Chandy said that people’s representatives should strive to give suggestions even while taking a critical approach on new projects.
“Only 3-4 members of local bodies have turned up for the workshop. It is important to give constructive suggestions than creating controversies,’’ he added. The Chief Minister said Emerging Kerala was not an investors meet. ‘’It is a platform to exchange ideas. It is a forum where investment opportunities in the state will be showcased before global investors. Projects will be considered only after studying its environmental effects,’’ he said.
