KOZHIKODE: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will visit Marad to evaluate the Sparsham (Sustainable Poverty Alleviation and Reformation of the Sea-belt Area of Marad)  project at 5 pm on October 29. The project was launched by the district administration to generate employment opportunities for women in Marad.At a press conference here, District Collector P B Salim said the chief minister will inaugurate the goat rearing scheme as part of the Sparsham initiative on the occasion. Two goats each will be distributed to 275 women.At present, five employment units are working in the village providing jobs to 250 women residing in the coastal village. Sparsham project has received nationwide attention and the district administration has expanded the project to Shanti Nagar Colony, aiming to improve the living conditions of slum dwellers. A sum of Rs 15 crore has been sanctioned by the state government for this project to provide houses and employment to the people living in slums.The District Collector said the Chief Minister will also release the book Malabar: Paithrukavum Prathapavum, a collection of articles depicting the history and secular culture of Malabar by handing over a copy to writer M T Vasudevan Nair at a function to be held at the Town Hall at 4 pm on October 29.The book is compiled by Collector P B Salim, N P Hafiz Muhammed and M C Vasisht.
