CHENNAI: It was a dramatic beginning to business at the year-end session of the Chennai Corporation Council, as a DMK councillor was manhandled just as proceedings were about to begin. As soon as Mayor Saidai Duraisamy administered an oath against untouchability, DMK floor leader T Subhash Chandra Bose raised his hand seeking permission to speak before question hour. He was immediately mobbed by rival party councillors. Even as the Mayor vociferously called for decorum, the councillors screamed at Bose and pulled him down onto his seat. When he stood up again, he was knocked back onto his seat. “All the councillors must return to their seats immediately. It is my duty to grant or not grant time to a member to speak. You must not take this in your hands,” the Mayor said as he clanged the bell. As they toned down, the Mayor asked the DMK floor leader to hold his comments till the end of question hour. But Bose stood up again, sparking off more protests. The DMK members then walked out, only to return to their seats in 10 minutes and allow the meet to continue.
