Recently, the forest cell of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) received a message from a resident of Malleswaram that a bird was entangled in a thread and was battling for life. Within minutes, volunteers of the Forest Cell and Fire and Emergency Service personnel rushed to the spot and freed the bird after a five-hour operation. The cell receives at least 20-30 calls everyday. While some birds are fortunate to get a new lease of life, many die of strangulation. The Chinese kite thread, which is a nylon thread, is the culprit. The BBMP’s forest cell volunteers spend a lot of time, rescuing birds entangled in the kite thread, with the help of the fire brigade and Bangalore Electricity Supply Company limited. Unlike the conventional threads, these Chinese threads, which are reportedy manufacutured in Kolkata, are easily available in all leading shops. During play, children compete with each other by attempting to cut the kite thread or Manja of their counterpart. The now loose kite and its thread float in the air and is found drifting among trees, poles or rooftops. These loose kite thread is a snare for humans, birds and animals. Honorary wildlife warden (Bangalore Urban), Forest Cell, R Sharath Babu says that there is an emergent need to ban the Chinese kite thread to save lives of birds. Since the thread is available in the open market, it is purchased by kite fliers without understanding its impact. This Chinese kite thread is banned in the cities like Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana and Mumbai.Sharath Babu explains that the authorities in Amritsar banned the sale and use of China kite thread after an incident left one person dead and nearly half a dozen injured. “The Government of Karnataka has to take a similar step in the interest of human beings and birds,” he emphasises.
