BANGALORE: Members of India Against Corruption along with other NGOs and local residents have taken up the task of spreading awareness to keep our markets clean.
The five-day programme was launched in Bangalore on Saturday. A team of 35 members led by social activist Dr Meenakshi Bharat along with the residents of Malleswaram, Yeshwantpur a n d Malleswaram Swabhimana Initiative took part. Volunteers demonstrated how garbage can be segregated into dry and wet waste and how important clean roads are for the smooth flow of vehicles.
Speaking to City Express, Meenakshi Bharath said that it is just an awareness programme. People visited the Yeshwanthpur market which is full of green waste.
“Our volunteers visited the market on Saturday morning and spoke to the shop owners about cleanliness and sanitation. We told them that green waste is ideal for manure.
We made them realise that if they keep their place clean, more customers will visit,” she said.
Later when the team visited the market, the place was clean. “Unfortunately, when we visited the same place next day (Sunday), we found it untidy as before. Tidiness is not something that can be implemented in day or two.
It should come from an individual,” she added.
The team also plans for similar awareness programme in K R Market as well as Russel market.
“At present, the team is busy supporting the Anna Hazare campaign against corruption. But we will take up such initiatives in more such markets in the future. If the BBMP and the sweepers fail to keep the city clean, it is our duty to clean it,” said a volunteer. Volunteers also requested local residents to join hands to clean the markets.
