BANGALORE: The struggle with civic issues such as garbage disposal, regular supply of clean drinking water, functioning streetlights and smooth asphalted roads have becomes a mundane topic these days. Residents of various localities repeatedly approach the civic authorities and in turn the officials send them back with their patent words, “We will look into the matter’. In a similar case, issues such as insufficient supply of drinking water, broken roads, improper garbage disposal system and the immediate need for a park dominated the proceedings of the annual general body meeting of LIC colony in Jeevanbima Nagar held recently. The local corporator, Sumithra and MLA of C V Raman Nagar Assembly Constituency, S Raghu attended the meet.Speaking to City Express, a resident on the condition of anonymity said that the water had become a problem only recently. He said, “We used to get regular supply of water until a year ago. But in the last one year, the water supply is very erratic.” The resident also mentioned that the valveman, who monitors and regulates the water supply has been manipulating the supply. Also corroded water pipes is another cause for concern for the residents. Similarly, the old drain pipes in the area is faulty leading to several complaints in the area. “These drains are almost forty years old and are incapable of handling the excess volume of sewage generated now. As a result, they are almost perpetually blocked,” another resident informed. The residents forum also wants to clean up the colony with “Do not throw garbage here” sign boards in the area where the garbage trucks are parked (in 9th cross) due to persistent problem. “BBMP says that the location right in the middle of the colony is a temporary one and it will be shifted below the Domlur flyover soon. But we are unsure of when that will happen,” said a resident. Another issue raised by the residents was on the status of their long-pending demand of a playground. “We have been fighting for a playground and a park to be developed in plot no 2 of the colony for a long time. The plot had been allotted to various agencies in wrongful manner and hence we have been fighting a court case in the Karnataka High Court for the last 10 years. Currently the plot is being misused by miscreants and it almost resembles a jungle. To make the situation worse, there is a partially constructed building in the plot. The residents came together to collect funds in order to fight the court case,” said M S Anand, the president of the Association. Corporator Sumithra was unavailable for comments.
