THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: C K Chandrappan, veteran CPI leader and eminent parliamentarian, passed away after a prolonged illness on Thursday. Chandrappan,76, the party’s state secretary, had been undergoing treatment for cancer and the end came at KIMS hospital here at 12.10 pm. He is survived by wife Bulu Roy Choudhary.His body was taken to his residence at Kesavadasapuram and later to the state party headquarters MN Smarakam in the city by 4.20 pm.Chandrappan’s illness worsened after his campaign for the LDF in Piravom. He was admitted to the KIMS a few days back. Two days ago, he was put on ventilator.His body will be placed at the MN Bhavan till 7 am on Friday to enable the public to pay their last respects. He will be cremated at Valiyachudukad cemetery at Alappuzha at 6 pm.Known for his ideological conviction and unrelenting crusade against corruption and rise of party bureaucracy, Chandrappan stood like a beacon. Chandrappan, son of one of the frontline leaders of Punnapra-Vayalar struggle CK Kumarapanicker, known as Vayalar Stalin, and Ammukutty of Cheerappan Chira House, Vayalar, in Alappuzha district, had his schooling in Cherthala and Trippunithura.Graduating from Chittoor Government College, he had his post-graduation from University College, Thiruvananthapuram. He served as president and general secretary of the AISF and AIYF and emerged as a leader in the party from the early seventies. In 1971, he became the national council and national executive member in the 9th party congress in Kochi.He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Thalasseri (1971-77), Kannur (77-80) and Thrishur (2004-09). He was also elected to the Assembly from Cherthala in 1991 defeating Vayalar Ravi.He was adjudged as the best parliamentarian for his performance during 2004-09. Hundreds of people from all walks of life rushed to MN Smarakam to pay homage to Chandrappan.
