The Class X board exams may become compulsory yet again as the government is planning to scrap the no-detention policy, which was introduced under the Right to Education Act (RTE). The Central Advisory Board of Education will meet on Wednesday to decide on the issue.
In its first meeting since the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government came to power, the CABE will also discuss extension of Right to Education Act to pre-school and secondary education. It will also discuss measures to lighten the load of school bags.
The meeting will be attended by Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry officials with education ministers, experts and academicians.
Under the no-detention policy, students were automatically promoted to the next class without any examination till 8th standard.
Parents and the teaching community have expressed concerns that the no-detention policy and making class 10 board exams optional have led to deterioration in the quality of school education.
On the other hand government official claim that the no-detention policy and making class 10 board exam option was introduced with the aim to reduce stress amongst students.
Many states have also pointed out learning outcome in schools have been poor ever since the Class X board exams were made optional and no-detention policy was ingtroduced..
