Mumbai: Dipping TRPs for K-serials, no great kick-start for SRK's Panchvi Pass, who's to blame?
"I would watch Paanchi Paas," says the King Khan.
But it seems not everybody agrees with the King Khan because the DLF Indian Premier League seems to be grabbing more eyeballs than anything on the small screen or even the big screen.
With most Hindi films bombing at the box office ever since the manoranjan Ka baap has hit television, it looks like the IPL is is bad news for Bollywood. Biggies like Tashan, U Me Aur Hum and Krazzy 4 have failed to draw audiences into theaters since the IPL kicked off.
"IPL has definitely made a 30% dent in our earnings. Now IPL is entering its last stage of knock-out and that's not great news for exhibitors," says Anand, VP, Marketing, Fun Cinemas.
The cricket series has been garnering high Television viewership ratings with matches gaining an average rating of over 5. Naturally IPL has also affected the viewership of other TV shows including Shah Rukh Khan's Paanchvi Paas and the mother of all soaps Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi both of which averaged with ratings as low as 3.
"GEC's have been affected with the IPL. It has changed paradigms as far as TV is concerned. IPL has got an average of 6 for all its matches so far," says Gangadhar T, Marketing Head, Set Max.
It's no wonder then that some producers are now willing to shift the release dates of their films till after the 2nd of June once the IPL hungama ends. So films like UTV's Aamir shifted its release date from 23rd May to 6th June, while Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Raj will also release on the same day.
"We moved the release date of Aamir from 23rd to 6th June. For a small film like Aamir, we wanted to give it the best opportunity at the BO and we don't mind shifting the dates of the movie," says Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures.
So it is official that in this new form of cricketainment, cricket has won over entertainment!
