VELLORE: Due to the rapid rise in the number of road accidents and trauma-related cases in the State, the Department of Orthopaedics of the Christian Medical College (CMC) is organising the 45th Annual Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association (TNOA) Conference. The three-day event, which begins on February 9, will devote several sessions to managing complex trauma episodes. The fort city is hosting the TNOA conference after a gap of about 18 years.According to Professor Ravi Jacob Korula, organising secretary of the conference, there will be simultaneous sessions on spine, paediatric orthopaedics, musculoskeletal oncology, hand surgery, arthroscopy and sports medicine. The annual conference is an occasion to exchange ideas and keep track of the latest developments in the field. Over 600 delegates and leading ortho surgeons from the State are expected to participate in the event that will be inaugurated by Health Minister Dr Vijay, orthopaedic surgeon and member of TNOA. Padma Shri Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, vice-chancellor of MGR Medical University will be the guest of honour. Leading orthopaedic surgeon Professor Natarajan, head of the department, Madras Medical College, will deliver the keynote address.At the continuing Medical Education sessions held a day earlier for the benefit of the students and junior orthopaedics, leading faculty members from institutions from India, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Switzerland and New Zealand will share their knowledge and expertise on orthopaedics. Special orations and awards will also be given away during the event. For post graduate students, there will be fellowship examinations and quiz competitions besides badminton and other sports tournament to promote fitness.
