Coal scam: Deve Gowda welcomes CBI probe

Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda on Tuesday welcomed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into coal block allocations during his tenure as the Prime Minister.

Following a letter from the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), the CBI is taking up the probe into all coal block allocations since 1993. Gowda was the Prime Minister for 10 months during 1996-97. “I have no issues with any agency probing any decisions taken during my tenure,” Gowda told reporters here. “I am ready for any inquiry,” he added.

FDI in Retail

Gowda strongly opposed the Centre’s recent decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the retail sector and extended support to the Left parties protesting against the move.

Before allowing FDI in retail, an all-party delegation must visit two villages each in all the states to study the impact of economic liberalisation started by the Congress government in 1991, he suggested.

The FDI in retail will allow corporate farming which will be detrimental for the farming sector.
