In a well-coordinated move, police prevented a bloody encounter between students of two rival colleges in Triplicane on Wednesday. Police sources said that in view of the recent clashes between students of various government colleges in the city due to long-standing bus route rivalry, plainclothesmen had been posted at different points on Anna Salai to maintain vigil.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Triplicane police received information that a group of 12-15 students from Nandanam Arts College, armed with weapons, were waiting at a bus stop on Anna Salai.
“They were waiting to settle scores with the Presidency College students travelling on the 27H and 29A bus routes,” Assistant Commissioner (Triplicane) S Senthil Kumaran told Express. Around 2.30 pm, when a special police team rushed to the spot, the students took to their heels. The police chased the fleeing students and caught two of them. They were identified as P Kumar (22), a resident of Red Hills, and Muhammed Ali from Periyapalayam in Arani. The ACP said that both were second-year commerce students of the Government Arts College in Nandanam. Three knives, six wooden logs and a metal pipe were seized from the duo. “The students had also kept stones ready at the bus stop,” the officer added.
Kumar and Ali were booked under Sections 147 and 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons) of IPC and produced before the 13th Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Egmore, which remanded them to judicial custody. They were later lodged at the Central prison in Puzhal.
5 Pachaiyappa’s Students Arrested Police claimed to have thwarted another bid to assault some students from Presidency College with the arrest of five Pachaiyappa’s College students, who were also found to be carrying some lethal weapons, on Wednesday. According to sources, Saravanan (20), Dinesh (20), Deenadhayalan (19), Divakar (20) and John Bosco (19) were picked up by police on suspicion. They were later arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
