KOLLAM: CPI deputy general secretary Sudhakar Reddy admitted here on Saturday that there is a competition between the CPI and the CPM, as both are in the process of expansion. However, he said that the competition should be healthy. “CPI and CPM are different entities and there will be some difference in opinions. In Kerala and West Bengal CPM is a bigger partner than CPI. There may be problems that CPI may point out regarding certain policies pursued by CPM. But that doesn’t mean that CPI is anti-CPM,” Reddy said. On the merger of CPI and CPM, Reddy said that the issues which led to the split of the Communist party in 1964 were yet to be resolved. “Still it is possible but for that to happen there should be discussions and debates. I am still of the opinion that the Communist parties should merge but it cannot be achieved when the effort is coming from just one side,” he said. On the prospects of a Third Front in the Centre led by Left, he said other non-BJP and non-Congress regional parties often tend to be opportunist.“They may be opposing the Congress or BJP, but does not have an alternative economic policy, which is the prime idea behind the Left alternative. The need for a Left alternative emerges from the neo-liberal economic policies followed by the BJP and Congress and the rampant corruption in the UPA II Government” he said. Replying to questions, Reddy said that Left parties were not late to act against the corruption at the Centre. He pointed out that the CPI leaders, including him, wrote letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pointing out the shady dealings in 2G spectrum allocation in 2008 itself but the PM failed to act.“If they had shown the will to act then such an embarrassment for UPA Government could have been avoided,” he said Reddy said that Anna Hazare’s campaign against corruption was good as it had given a direction to the anti-corruption movement in the country. “But the way in which Hazare and his team acts is not acceptable. They cannot dictate terms to the Parliament,” he said.
