Mumbai: The family of Chandu Babulal Chauhan, the Indian soldier who inadvertently strayed across the Line of Control, is confident of his safe return.
“I called him last Wednesday but we spoke for just a few minutes,” rues Ganesh Babulal Chauhan, Chandu’s brother. “I hope I get to hear his voice again,” he says.
“Prime Minister Modi has always spoken of achhe din (good days) and I am confident the PM will ensure my brother is brought back unharmed. That is my appeal to him," says Ganesh, who is also a soldier with the 9 Maratha Light Infantry and is posted in Jamnagar in Gujarat.
It has been a tough week for the family. Hours after learning that Chandu had inadvertently crossed the de facto border, the family lost his grandmother, who had brought up the brothers after they were orphaned at a young age.
When asked about initial conflicting reports on Chandu, Ganesh says he received a call informing him that his brother had inadvertently crossed over to Pakistan-held territory. He didn't elaborate.
Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said all efforts were being made to secure the soldier's release. Singh said New Delhi will take up the matter with Islamabad.
PTI had on Thursday quoted Indian Army sources as saying that "one soldier from 37 RR carrying a weapon has inadvertently crossed over to the other side of the Line of Control. Pakistan has been informed by the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) on the hotline”.
