THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Co-operative Consumers’ Federation Ltd (Consumerfed) will organise fairs in all the 140 Assembly constituencies in connection with Onam, said Cooperation Minister C N Balakrishnan. While inaugurating the fair at the LMS Compound here the other day, the Minister said the fairs at the constituency-level will begin from July 21. The Consumerfed will make available 35 essential items at the fairs, that will last for 52 days. The Consumerfed is ready to set up permanent outlets in those grama panchayats where required space could be made available for this purpose, he added. The fair has been organised as part of the 100-day action plan of the UDF government. K Muraleedharan MLA presided over the function.As many as 20 essential items were available with a rebate up to 60 per cent at the fair on the LMS compound, said Consumerfed Regional Manager Sweesh Sukumaran. The number of items would be increased to 35 by the time of Onam season at this fair, that would run for 62 days. "All items are sold at very low prices compared to that in the open markets. One of the lowest-priced item is chilli, which is sold at Rs 45 per kg, compared to the open market price of Rs 134. Rice, sugar and pulses are also available at low prices,’’ he added.
