New Delhi: Two policemen were on Tuesday punished with rigorous imprisonment on charges of bribery.
While Police Inspector Jagannath Shivram Jadhav of Vashi police station was sentenced to seven years RI, constable Arun Baban Jagdhane got one year RI.
Awarding the sentence, Additional Sessions Judge D B Pujari also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Jadhav and Rs 5,000 on Jadghane.
The cops were convicted for demanding a bribe of Rs one lakh from the relative of Mohd Nabi Ahmed Nabi Qureshi, detained on charges of robbery in 2001.
Qureshi was taken to Vashi Railway Police Station by the duo but wasn't produced before the court for three consecutive days from February 7-10, 2001.
When his relative Ruksana Banu visited the police station, the policemen demanded Rs one lakh from her to be paid in installments to release Qureshi.
Banu then filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau and a trap was laid for the duo, who were caught while taking the first installment of Rs 25,000 from her.
