Tile-roofed buildings had once been the picture that rushed to the minds as the nostalgic memories of schools in Kerala.
Later, they gave way to the concrete buildings which solved the problems of space constraints and provided convenience. And the tiled-roofed ones were conferred the status of the symbol of the past.
Now, Cotton Hill Government Higher Secondary School for Girls at Vazhuthacaud in the city too is saying goodbye to the tiled buildings on its campus.
Health Minister V S Sivakumar, the other day, had announced an amount of ` 10 crore for constructing a new building complex in place of the tiled ones during a programme to promote vegetable farming among school students organised by the Agriculture Department. The architectural drawing for this purpose is nearing completion.
“The construction of the building would be completed in phases as per plan. The tile-roofed buildings are mostly in the high school section. Before demolishing the buildings at present, we should also be careful not to disturb the classes happening there and have to make alternative arrangements for that. In the high school section alone, more than 3,600 students are studying. We received an amount of ` one crore last year for the building construction purpose,” said Mary Sisilet Princela, Headmistress of the school.
The school, which is around 150 years old, has approximately 7,000 students in all sections. Other than allocating money for erecting the building, 1,000 chairs would be given for the school auditorium. Half of which would be made available within a week. The school will also get fifteen computers soon. From the MLA fund, a school bus was bought for the Cotton Hill LP School spending ` 15 lakh. The bus will be flagged off on Friday.
