In a case of human sacrifice, a four-year-old child was allegedly killed by a couple, with the support of two tantriks, to ensure the well-being of their ailing son in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district, police said on Thursday.
"Four persons, including the couple and two 'baigas' (witch doctors) were arrested on Thursday for allegedly killing Sunil Kashyap on July 11 in Changori village under Akaltara police station limits," Janjgir-Champa Superintendent of Police, Prashant Agrawal said.
The accused are identified as Chhatram Patel, his wife Rajkumari and the tantriks, namely Ramayan Patel and Kaliram, he said.
According to police, the child had gone missing on July 11 while he was playing nearby his home, following which his parents lodged a complaint with Akaltara police.
After two days, Sunil's partially decomposed body was found on the outskirts of the village, Agrawal said.
"The autopsy report revealed that the child's throat was slit and he was also strangulated," the SP said.
Agrawal said that Chhatram and his wife Rajkumari were rounded up on suspicion and they spilled the beans of their involvement in the crime during investigation.
"They confessed to have committed the crime and narrated the sequence of events, the SP said.
The officer said that Chhatram's 22-year-old son Suraj was suffering from some illness for past several months.
"On the suggestion of the witch doctors, they decided to offer a human sacrifice for curing of their ailing son.
They allegedly abducted the boy on July 11 and murdered him at their residence on the same night. They then dumped his body on the outskirts of the village," the SP said, adding that the tantriks were also allegedly involved in the killing.
He said the accused had been booked under various sections of IPC including murder.
