Court boycott over lawyers suspension

Advocates affiliated to different bar associations in Madurai stayed away from the proceedings of the HC bench here condemning the order of the Tamil Nadu Bar Council suspending advocate W Peter Ramesh Kumar, President of Madurai Bench of Madras High Court Bar Association (MMBA), from practising law in any court for two years.

The State bar council took the drastic action against Peter Ramesh Kumar holding him guilty under the Advocates Act, 1961, of ‘professional misconduct’. According to the bar council, the advocate had obstructed the course of justice by using insulting and disrespectful language against a judge inside a court hall in 2010.

The bar council also reprimanded two other advocates, B Muruganandam and K Saravanan, who they said signed without knowledge an affidavit with defamatory allegations against judicial officers. The order dated July 30, 2012, was received by the trio on Saturday.

“I did tender an unconditional apology but it was rejected. We are planning to stage an indefinite boycott if the order is not quashed,” Peter Ramesh Kumar told Express. “Advocates from 14 other districts might be joining us from Tuesday.
