THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI has called for urgent intervention of the Prime Minister Manmohan singh to solve the Mullaperiyar issue.Addressing a news conference here on Saturday, CPI state secretary C K Chandrappan said Prime Minister had assured the all-party delegation that he would intervene when the climate was conducive for talks. He said that there was no situation which did not permit the Prime Minister to intervene in the issue. The Prime Minister should have shown more political will to amicably settle the issue. There was no uncontrollable situation in Tamil Nadu. Former President A P J Abdul Kalam had also called for amicable settlement of the issue, Chandrappan said. He said that in Kerala neither the LDF nor the UDF had launched any agitation on the Muallaperiyar issue. It was separate agitations launched by political parties taking place in the state. He said that CPI had not withdrawn the agitation and it would continue to agitate on the issue. It is important to extend support to the people of Idukki as they fighting to save their lives from an impending disaster. Chandrappan said that CPI general secretary A B Bardhan had also taken a stand similar to that of the State Government. Kerala should ensure that Tamil Nadu would continue to get the benefits when the new dam is constructed. He said that if the Left in Tamil Nadu was strong, things would have been different. Asked to comment on the CPM party conference evaluation that if CPM had over 50 percent presence in the state it would have remained in power, he said such evaluations were impractical.’’ We should be more realistic in a democratic system,’’ he said. He was doubtful whether the discussions in the CPM conferences were objective. ‘’We know CPM has some problems. It is not at all a secret. They may not say we had tried to defeat our candidates,’’ he said, referring to the defeat of the CPI candidates in some of the constituencies in Thiruvananthapuram district and defeat of the LDF candidate in the Lok Sabha elections. He said CPI state conference would be held in Kollam from February 7 to 11. The next party congress scheduled to be held at Patna in Bihar would explore the prospect of a new path for leading India into socialism.
