THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the CPM district conference commences from Thursday, the CPM leadership here is in a relaxed mood. Strictly adhering to the official line of avoiding contests, none of the 18 area conferences had opted for a contest. It may be noted that some of the southern districts where area conferences were held, the party leadership had to face the embarrassment of factional feuds spilling on to the streets. But in Thiruvananthapuram, it has by and large managed to tame the disgruntled elements and succeeded in setting everything in order. In the last district conference, factional feuds had even forced the leadership to cancel the election of the committee. However, there are rumblings within the official faction. Though the official faction has total domination, the feud within the faction has come to the fore in the area conferences. The anti-Kadakampalli axis led by Anavoor Nagappan and Koliyakkodu Krishnan Nair is expected to offer a challenge to the incumbent secretary Kadakampally Surendran. But no one expects any upset in the triumphant run of Surendran as he continues to be the favourite of state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. The district secretary could ensure the representation of the VS faction leaders in the newly-elected area committees and delegates to the district committee. This will have an impact in the formation of the new district committee. It will also help him check whatever opposition emerging from the Anavoor Nagappan-Koliyakkode camp. Interestingly, V Sivankutty MLA is expected to keep a low profile to get the support of Kadakampally Surendran in getting inducted into the state committee. But some of the allegations being raised against by the VS faction against Sivankutty and Kadakampally may be discussed at the conference. As the number of the district committee members had been limited to 41 as per the new guidelines, it would require real effort for the leadership to exclude some of the existing members. The conference is expected to conduct a postmortem on the unexpected defeats in some of the constituencies in the district in the Assembly elections. Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan will inaugurate the district conference at the AKG hall at 10 am. There will be 373 delegates from 18 area committees.
