The government has washed its hands of by saying that the necessary action in this regard will be taken by the Indian Council for Child Welfare,” she said.Mercy said that, when she entered the service in 1982, her salary was just Rs 150. She said that an increase in the income, as assured by the authorities concerned, prompted her to stick on. “We were told that our salaries would be raised to Rs 3,000. But no action has been taken so far,” she lamented.The workers are left in the lurch as they lack an association to voice their opinions. Though the council works as per the Central Government Act, the state government could have eased their burden by increasing the salaries, she said.An additional amount of Rs 300 was promised to the workers by the Ernakulam District Council for Child Welfare as a temporary solution. There are eight creches in the district and the Children’s Park functioning under the council has been garnering quite a handful of revenue.But the proposal failed to come into effect as the elected body appointed to monitor the activities of the State Council for Child Welfare was dispersed by the UDF government. “Owing to some political skirmishes, the elected body was wound up.
