COIMBATORE: The latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau has come as stark reminder on the dangers that lurk in the virtual world of internet. The ‘Crime in India 2010’ report released on Thursday points to the rapid increase of cyber crimes in the country. While the number of cyber crimes recorded in 2009 is just 696, the figure rose to 1,322 in 2010. Similarly, the number of persons arrested has more than doubled to 1,193 from the previous year’s 551.Hacking into computer systems is the most prevalent cyber crime reported with nearly 38.5 percent (510 of the total 1,322) of the crimes. However, the most of number of persons arrested for the cyber crimes are relating to obscene publication/transmission. Nearly 30 percent (361 of 1193) persons were arrested under the charge.Expectedly, the most number of offenders are from the 18-30 years of age group as 47.1 percent (563 of 1193) of the arrested persons falls under this age group. Interestingly, 17 minors were also booked for cyber crimes in the year. In 75 per cent of the cases, the offender is a stranger to the victim. The most common motive for the crime are cited as ‘fraud/illegal gain’ and ‘eve teasing/harassment’.While Chennai may be emerging as an IT hub, only 15 cyber crime cases were reported in the city. While Karnataka (176 cases) and Andhra Pradesh (171 cases) reported most of cases, in Tamil Nadu only 77 cyber crimes were recorded.“The reason for such an increase in cyber crimes is that most people assume they can’t be traced if they use technology. The large number of cases registered by the police is also a good indication that awareness is growing among police personnel about cyber crimes. But still police are relying on IPC to get a accused convicted as they lack training in producing electronic evidences under IT Act in way that would convince the judges,” said V Rajendran, Vice President, Cyber Society of India.
