Hyderabad: The winter monsoons are wreaking havoc down south. Chennai is flooded due to heavy rain. Thirty five people have died in Tamil Nadu out of which seven people died in Chennai.
The Met department has predicted heavy rains for the next 24 hours, which might result in cyclonic storm, resulting in schools being shut down.
While Tamil Nadu battles flood, Andhra Pradesh has been receiving continuous rain since Sunday morning leading to a low pressure build up, which has led to the formation of a cyclonic storm.
The cyclone is currently placed near Guntur district, 50 kms east of Ongol, at about 60 kilometers per hour. The areas which may be hit the hardest are the Prakasam district and Vishakapatnam.
The system was likely to intensify further and cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Bapatla by forenoon, the Met office said.
Two people have died in the Guntur District, even as the Falaknuma express was derailed by heavy rain early on Monday. However, no casualties have been reported from the area.
The Thiruvananthapuram-Hyderabad Sabari express was diverted run via Vijayawada, three passenger trains were cancelled, following the derailment, according to SCR PRO Panabaka Krishnaiah.
Over 10,000 people were evacuated to 18 relief camps in Guntur and Prakasam districts, as rains claimed two lives in Guntur district.
Disaster Management Additional Commissioner Priayadarshini said that control rooms have been opened in the two districts. District collectors are overseeing relief operations, she added.
District officials in all areas are on high alert and fishermen have been warned not to venture out to sea as gale winds with speed reaching 70 to 80 kmph are likely along and off the coastal areas of Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna, East and West Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts in the next 48 hours.
The state of sea is likely to be very rough along and off Andhra Pradesh coast. Tidal waves of 1 to 1.5 meter over and above normal tides are likely. Squally winds with speed reaching 50 to 60 kmph are likely to occur along and off the coastal areas of Nellore, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts during the period.
Under the influence of the system, widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places is likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and also adjoining districts of south Telangana during next 24 hours.
Rains are likely at many places over Rayalaseema and other parts of Telangana. Highest rainfall recorded in Bapatla and Machilipatnam - 27 and 25 centimeters respectively.
