Kolkata: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration has issued an alert for tourists and fishermen due to approaching tropical cyclone Pabuk.
On January 5, Pabuk is expected to make landfall in the Andaman Sea. Heavy rainfall is predicted in the region as the storm will pass through the islands till January 7. According to weather forecast, the cyclone will move towards northeast and Myanmar coast after January 7. Meanwhile, the Odisha government has put seven districts including Puri, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Balasore, Khurda and Jagatsinghpur on alert due to Pabuk.
Speaking to News18, Director General of Police, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dependra Pathak, said, “Currently, the cyclonic storm Pabuk is located above the South China sea. It is nearly 2,000km away from Port Blair. We have alerted all the concerned departments and requested tourists and fishermen not to venture out in the sea shores. We have also advised against adventure sports for coming days.”
“Under Pabuk’s influence, squally wind speed between 40-50 km/hour is gusting to 102 km per hour and very rough sea conditions are likely to remain over Andaman Sea. Those who are in deep sea were asked to return immediately,” he added.
According to weather forecast reports, the cyclone will move towards northeast and Myanmar coast, respectively.
The Coast Guard has also issued an advisory, which reads, “As per weather forecast, tropical cyclone Pabuk will be crossing over the Andaman Sea on January 5, 2019. In view of the above, it is requested that the fishermen may be advised not to venture into sea from 04 to 07 January, 2019.” (sic)
However, it will have no impact in West Bengal. Director of Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, Ganesh Kumar Das, said “There is no need to panic in West Bengal. There will be no impact of Pabuk in our state.”
