New Delhi: The brutal gangrape of a paramedical student on the night of December 16, 2012 in a moving bus in Delhi shocked the nation and brought it to a standstill. Chill runs down the spine whenever one reads about the sheer brutality inflicted upon the 23-year-old victim by six men on a moving bus in the national capital.
People were out on streets protesting against the rise in crime against women and were demanding rapists be stoned to death.
Popular television actor Anup Soni, who anchors 'Crime Patrol' on Sony television, also featured in the episode that portrayed the December 16 gangrape incident. Soni is of the opinion that death for convicts in rape cases is not wrong. "People are not scared of law. There should be a very stringent punishment. Hanging is not wrong in certain cases," he said.
"When a person is raped, he/she is destroyed mentally as well," he added.
"It was difficult to shot it. We were very careful and sensitive while airing the episode. We did not want to glamorise or sensationalise the incident," he said about the episode on the December 16 incident.
On reading about the incident for the first time, Soni said he was shocked and it also revealed the mindset of the people. "It was the result of the upbringing. At home, men should be taken care of," he said.
When asked about the social stigma where a girl/woman is held responsible for the incident, he said, "It is ridiculous to say 'ki galti ladki ki he hogi'. As every coin has two sides, precautions have to be taken in every sphere and one has to be careful."
At a time, when the small screen in flooded with shows ranging from child education, women empowerment to widow remarriages, he said, "There is a need to create awareness among people so that they become sensitive towards a victim, but at the same point it should not look like a lecture."
