New Delhi: As many as 135 couples lodged in Tihar jail on Saturday celebrated Karvachauth amid tight vigilance and special festive arrangements.
The arrangements were made in the women jail of Tihar where 135 women observed fast for the long life of their husbands who are also lodged in the prison.
"Special arrangements were made for food and snacks. Some programmes were also organised. The women inmates observed fast and celebrated the day with their men who are also lodged in various prisons of the Tihar complex," DIG Delhi Prisons, Mukesh Prasad said.
"It was an attempt to make their day. The women felt delighted by reuniting with their men even if for just one day which is not a usual practice as they are kept in different jails. It was a festive day and therefore such a special initiative was taken," he said.
The couples performed the rituals as per the Indian culture and women prayed for the long lives of their husbands, seeking blessings from them.
In another special initiative to provide the inmates and it's staff timely and best medical facility, two Centralised Ambulance Trauma Services (CATS) ambulances have been deployed at the gate number 3 for 24x7 service at Tihar.
"By this we wanted to ensure that anyone be it our staff or any inmate, gets best medical facility and on time. Our ambulance service wasn't so good and therefore this step has been taken on our request," Prasad said.
To enhance the emergency medical response, a meeting was held with the zonal officers of the CATS and decision to station two ambulances at Tihar was taken, he said.
