New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Monday detained one person after a man was allegedly beaten to death after his bike collided with a car in Turkman gate area of Old Delhi.
The victim's family blocked traffic demanding police action and immediate arrest of the accused.
The victim's mother said, "I don't know why he was beaten. He was not a violent person."
The victim's son and an eye-witness said, "The police did not help him. They stood-by as he was beaten."
The incident took place when the victim, identified as Shahnawaz, was returning home on his motorcycle along with his two children.
As they reached Turkman gate, the bike hit an i-20 car. An argument ensued between the occupants of the car and the motorcyclist, which soon turned ugly with Shahnawaz beaten up badly. He was later taken to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead, police said.
An eyewitness said, "No one helped the victim as he was being thrashed. The victim is a local builder."
Soon after the incident, tension prevailed in the area as locals protested alleging police inaction in the case. Heavy police deployment was made in the area and some people have been detained.
"We have registered a case of murder and investigations are on. We are examining CCTVs installed in the area to identify the assailants," said a senior police official.
