New Delhi: Two foreigners were arrested in the capital for allegedly hacking the bank account of a confectionery company in New Delhi and fraudulently withdrawing about Rs 16 lakh. A laptop, mobile phone, fake South African passport and Indian Visa and other materials were recovered from Evans Ukah Mendi (34), who is from Cameroon, and William Tambo (37), hailing from South Africa, police said on Monday.

On February 29, a resident of Civil Lines, who owns a confectionary company, lodged a complaint alleging that some miscreants had hacked his official bank account and siphoned off Rs 16 lakh through net banking without his knowledge.

During investigation it was revealed that the culprits hacked his account and used the money to purchase goods, including perfumes, mobile phones and shoes, online.

Some of the online shopping sites grew suspicious over the transaction of such a large sum of money and tipped off police, who laid a trap to nab the culprits.

The two foreign nationals were arrested from Safdarjung Enclave when they came to claim a parcel they had ordered online, officials said.

During interrogation, the duo confessed that they had hacked the bank account of the company through net phishing, police said.

Phishing is carried out by e-mail spoofing or instant messaging and it often directs users to enter details in fake websites.

It was also found that the accused did not possess any valid travel documents.

Mendi came to India in 2008 on a student visa and did his diploma in computers from Mumbai, while Tambo, a resident of South Africa, entered India illegally through the Nepal border two years ago, said officials.
